Dear Özkan,
On behalf of the United Democrats and myself allow me to express my sincere and warm congratulations for your election to the Presidency of the Republican Turkish Party.
Your election comes at critical times for Cyprus, our common homeland, in view of which, all responsible political parties in Cyprus must join efforts in order to lead the country into the brighter times that the reunification of our country will bring. There is no further time to waste.
Demographic changes, property right issues, financial dependence of the North on Turkey, have now been exacerbated by economic recession, social desperation and even growth of xenophobia and racism.
Not to mention the vast amounts of money being spent in defence by all of Turkey, Greece and Cyprus, at a time when this money could be used to drive the countries out of economic recession and lead them to economic prosperity.
With the conclusion of elections in Turkey, another short window of opportunity is opening for the attainment of an agreement on the reunification of Cyprus and for the normalization of political relations between the whole of Cyprus and Turkey, including the facilitation of the accession process of Turkey to the European Union.
The planned meeting between the leaders of the two communities and the Secretary General of the UN on 7th July could pave the way for the fruitful utilization of this window of opportunity. Opponents of a solution on both sides of the green line in Cyprus are aware of this prospect and have unfortunately already started work towards undermining and if possible cancelling the prospect of progress towards solution.
This is why all political forces in Cyprus which understand that the Cypriots can have no future unless their country reunites, have the responsibility to join their forces towards the attainment of an agreement between the leaders of the two communities on the reunification of Cyprus on the commonly agreed basis of a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality as defined in relevant UN resolutions.
This is the time for all concerned parties to look ahead into the benefits – both economic and political – that lasting peace on the island and peaceful coexistence and cooperation between a reunited Cyprus, Greece and Turkey will yield to all the people of the area and to our wider European family.
The United Democrats will actively encourage all concerned parties to work towards the attainment of an agreement that will reunite our country and liberate the future of our children.
With this in view, and given the long history of cooperation and dialogue between our two parties, we consider that it would be useful if the Secretariats of our two Parties could meet to exchange views on the way ahead. We remain at your disposal to arrange a meeting in either our offices or yours at your earlier convenience.
We wish you strength, inspiration and perseverance on the way ahead.
