Σπύρος προς Μαρίνον – Παρέμβαση Σπύρου Χατζηγρηγορίου στη συνάντηση του Λήδρα Πάλας

Intervention by Spyros Hadjigregoriou at the Biccommunal meeting at the Ledra Palace on 30TH SEPTEMBER 2015

‘’When our politicians speak or act they must not have in mind not their own specific interests or the interest of any particular ethnic or political group, but the interest of all Cypriots. ‘’

Madam Chair Lady,
Dear President of the House of Representatives,
Dear Compatriots,
Dear Friends,

A very timely subject brought up for discussion to our to-days meeting by the party of the Social Democrats, EDEK.

The subject asks the question: “What are the basic parameters for a democratic solution of the Cyprus problem”.
It is a timely subject because the Leaders of the two major communities have embarked on strenuous negotiations to reach to a solution of the Cyprus problem which has been harassing the people of our beautiful island for more than sixty years now.

I can state from the outset that for myself and for my party the basic parameters which are needed for sustainable peace and prosperity in our country are the elimination of fear and mistrust which have been frightening the minds and hearts of many of our compatriots for many decades now.

To achieve the solution goodwill, mutual trust and willingness to live and work together are urgently needed.

Furthermore, before one starts thinking and writing about the solution and the reunification of our country, he or she and all of us must have a vision for the day after and for the future that lies ahead.

____________________________________________________________________________________

It is widely accepted that societies and governments without a vision are doomed to perish .
Can there be a better example than the example of Eleftherios Venizelos and Kemal Attaturk who after a bitter and bloody war in 1922 succeeded in building trust and cooperation between their two countries.

It is not unreasonable if we appeal do “our mother countries” Greece and Turkey to withdraw their military forces from our island , knowing that they have everything to gain by withdrawing their military forces and by supporting peace and prosperity and the reunification of our country.

Additionally we can reassure Turkey that she has everything to gain from the cooperation with a friendly neighbor, however strong and powerful she may itself be. We all know that even a flea can not only be a nuisance to a lion but it can also cause it pain and slow down its march.

Any good constitutional lawyer can draft rules and laws but these laws can be a stain on paper. Sometimes the interpretation of the said laws becomes the subject of major disputes. The achievement of the common goal must be their determination to live in peace for ever and ever, in a multicultural society with absolute respect to the human rights, the ethics and the to culture “of all others”.

What is mostly and urgently needed is consensus in reaching vital economic and political decisions. When our politicians speak or act they must not have in mind not their own specific interests or the interest of any particular ethnic or political group, but the interest of all Cypriots.

We must as from today stop the blame game and we must address respect, good wishes and our willingness for reconciliation our banker must be strong desire to build together our common future.

The United Democrats
